Nothing ruins a holiday more than a trip to the Emergency Room. An accident can be prevented by taking precautionary safety steps and by using good judgement. Make sure that your holiday celebration is both safe and fun by following these safety tips.
Firework Safety
• Make sure you are obeying the law. If you’re not allowed to use fireworks where you live, there is probably a very good reason. Keep yourself and your family safe and out of legal trouble by knowing the law on fireworks and obeying it.
• Talk to young people about firework safety. Do not let them near fireworks unsupervised.
• If you decide to light off fireworks, make sure you are following all directions.
• Never alter existing fireworks or engineer your own. Be sure you are buying fireworks from a reputable and legitimate place. Never buy a homemade firework.
• When lighting fireworks off, keep water nearby.
• Keep a safe distance when spectating fireworks.
• Do not let anyone who is under the influence light off a firework.
• To dispose of fireworks, soak them in water before throwing them away to prevent a trash fire.
Outdoor Safety
It’s likely you’ll be spending extended periods of time outside on the fourth or over the weekend, at the lake, at barbeques, or other fun outdoor events.
• Be aware of weather precautions. Protect yourself from sunburn and dehydration.
• Stay in the shade and avoid alcohol to lower your risk of dehydration. Drink plenty of water.
• If you are planning on going swimming, as many do on the fourth, use floatation devices as necessary.
