Winter is finally over and spring has arrived. It’s a beautiful time of year with warm weather, mild breezes, and flowers in bloom. As we know all too well in Kansas, however, spring is also “Tornado Season.” Tornados are powerful forces of nature that are extremely dangerous and unpredictable. They destroy buildings, take lives, and turn debris into projectile missiles. When you’re at home when a tornado is in the area, you can take cover in your shelter. But what do you do when you’re driving on the road? Our Wichita personal injury attorneys want drivers to protect themselves by remembering these important safety tips.
Stay Safe on the Road with Tips from Our Wichita Personal Injury Attorneys
The Tornado is Far Away
You’re driving on the road and you see a tornado in the distance. Which direction is it moving? Drive at a right angle to its movement. When the tornado is moving east, then drive to the south. It might also be possible to stop and let the tornado pass if it’s far enough away. If the tornado is closer, then you need to drive to a nearby location to take shelter. Look for truck stops, gas stations, rest areas, restaurants, or convenience stores. Take shelter in a hallway, basement, or room without windows and keep low to the ground.
Stopped in Traffic
Traffic is stopped and you can’t move your vehicle. Meanwhile, a tornado is threatening your immediate area. If there’s time, get out of your car and take cover in a ditch. If the tornado is on top of you, then stay in your car and fasten your seat belt. Keep your head down below your windshield and windows to protect yourself from breaking glass.
You’re in the Direct Path of the Tornado
Don’t just pull over to the side of the road. The high winds of the tornado will down power lines, spit dangerous debris, rip apart buildings, and hurl vehicles into the air. Safely drive off the road as soon as you can. Don’t stop under bridges or overpasses. These can act as a wind vortex and be even more dangerous. Stay in your vehicle, fasten your seat belt, and stay low to protect yourself from breaking glass.
